History:
The Pediatric Nursing Unit was established as a part of the Higher Institute of Nursing, Alexandria University in 1955. The Pediatric Nursing Unit was changed to Pediatric Nursing Department as a result of the republication decision in 1994. The department teaches pediatric nursing and developmental psychology courses for undergraduate students. In addition, the department has elite of faculty members who are excellent in teaching pediatric nursing.
Mission:
The mission of the Pediatric Nursing Department is to promote practice that is evidence based and knowledge driven through research. The graduate will be able to provide the highest quality family-centered care throughout children's hospitals, improve children's health through appropriate nursing interventions and education within the inpatient and ambulatory settings. Develop excellence in pediatric nursing. Share expertise and leadership through services to professional organizations.
Vision:
The Pediatric Nursing Department's vision is to quality candidate with the most advanced, compassionate and safest nursing management for children in different pediatric settings.
Objectives:
- Support the University's mission, vision and goals.
- Prepare graduates who are competent to meet the unique multiple and complex children health needs.
- Foster an appreciation for necessity of learning, thinking critically and continuing to grow personally and professionally.
- Contribute to the nursing profession and to society by engaging in scholarship, leadership, services.
- Acquire a high level of knowledge of the physical and psychological growth and development of children so that deviation from the normal can readily be detected.
- Develop more appreciation of the dynamic of family background, family relationships and life experience which influence a child's needs with varying degrees of illness.
- Develop competency to assess, implement and evaluate the children's needs with varying degrees of illness.
- Develop beginning skills in the research for new knowledge in the area of pediatric nursing.
- Investigate physical, social and psychological impact of illness on handicapped and hospitalized children at different stages of development.
Scientific Degrees:
The department offers special courses needed to award the following scientific degrees:
- Master in Pediatric Nursing.
- Doctorate in Pediatric Nursing.
- Diploma in Pediatric Nursing.
- Diploma in Critical Care Neonatal Nursing.
Skills Labs:
The department has two nursing skills laboratories which are well equipped for clinical training in pediatric nursing care, namely:
- The Neonatal Skills Lab.
- The Pediatric Lab for different age groups, as well as Sim-baby model in OSCE lab.
